THE INSTITUTE
The Valencia Institute of Don Juan was founded in 1916 by Guillermo de Osma y Scull and his wife Adelaida Crooke y Guzmán (the 13th Countess of Valencia de Don Juan) with the idea of creating a center dedicated to the research of the history, art, and culture of Spain through the artistic and documentary collections that the couple had gathered throughout their lives.
The collection of the Institute is preserved today in a unique Neo-Mudejar building constructed between 1889 and 1889 to be the private residence of Don Guillermo and Doña Adelaida. Among its more than 8,000 pieces (weapons, Hispano-Arabic ceramics, paintings, jet jewelry, etc.), it holds one of the most important, and possibly least known, collections of Andalusian art in the world. Additionally, the Institute preserves an important archive of 40,000 documents in its library, ranging from the Catholic Monarchs to the 19th century, and an extensive photographic collection consisting of more than 10,000 originals from the 19th and 20th centuries in various formats.
